Kate Gleason was one of the first female engineers to be recognised for her work. She was born in Rochester, New York in 1865. She attended Cornell University to study mechanical art at a time when very few women went onto further education.

When she left university, she started her engineering career working for her father in his machine shop. Her first project was to build a machine that produced bevelled gears, which she worked on with her father. As a result of their invention, the factory became the No. 1 producer of bevelled gears within the US.

She quickly built a reputation in the machine tools industry. In 1918, she became the first woman to be awarded membership of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
